The Island of the Apocalypse
Also known as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean”, Patmos is an island strongly characterised by a sense of spirituality and mysticism. Its truly unique energy goes hand in hand with a cosmopolitan flair that draws here year after year a sophisticated crowd of intellectuals, artists, celebrities, and jetsetters from all over the globe. Patmos may be a proud part of the Dodecanese Island complex, but for some mysterious reason it has a Cycladic feeling to it, with its whitewashed labyrinth-like alleys and its picturesque small port surely adding to the equation. Limpid waters, magnificent beaches, mouth-watering food, amazing sunsets, lively beach bars, premium resorts, and a vibrant nightlife have made this tiny island a rather hot destinations over the past decade, with the fortress-like monastery, standing on top of a hill, serving as its eternal guardian.

When to Visit
As most Greek islands, the tourist season in Patmos stretches from May to October, with summer being the ultimate peak zone. However, due to its strong spiritual side, the Island of the Apocalypse has a large number of visitors during Orthodox Easter, as for any faithful Orthodox this is undoubtedly holy land. Let us not forget that this is where Saint John the Theologian (one of Jesus’ 12 disciples) wrote his Revelation, also known as the Book of the Apocalypse, and the cave in which he lived and wrote, as well as his homonym monastery, have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. So, it’s kind of easy to understand why celebrating easter here, is quite of a unique experience. Apart from its religious side though, this beautiful small piece of land floating on the easternmost part of the Aegean, has much to offer any month one chooses to visit. May and June, as well as September and October, are rather quiet, with all its amazing beaches and picturesque locations free to enjoy in a quite serene and relaxed ambiance, while the weather is warm and very pleasant. July and August are high season with many visitors frequenting the hot-spot and secluded beaches, dining in the refined restaurants and enjoying the eclectic nightlife scene of Patmos, which however never seems overcrowded in a bad way.
Why Patmos
If pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, numerous secluded coves, drop-dead sunsets, mouth-watering cuisine, cool bars, sophisticated and elegant crowds, unpretentiously luxurious hotels and resorts, and important cultural sites are not reason enough to find yourself here, then surely what could be? We must say that most of Patmos’ visitors return again and again to the holiest ground of the Aegean, as above all else the energy of this place makes you see things differently and speaks directly to your soul, no matter if you are a religious person or not. The natural beauty of the island is also beyond words, as it may have become cosmopolitan, but it has never succumbed to modernism and touristy practises.
Patmos Experiences
Water sports, off-road driving, canoeing, and birdwatching at the lake of Petra, sailing and scuba diving, horseback riding and mountain biking, are only some of the many activities one can enjoy here. At the same time a daily excursion to the small islands of Lipsi, Arki, Marathi, Makronissi with the turquoise waters is an absolute must. Not to mention of course a tour to the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, places of high cultural and historical importance. Τhe Monastery, a fortress-like building complex, which has been operating continuously for over 900 years now, features a one-of-a-kind museum, displaying some of the oldest and best preserved transcriptions of ancient Greek philosophers in the world. Do note that to enter the monastery you must be accordingly dressed.
